My Favorite Montessori-Aligned Art Supplies

As Maria Montessori said "Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and the strength, use it to create." Art is a meaningful subject that gives kids the opportunity to use their imagination to lead their thought processes, express themselves, and display their unique perspective.

Integrating art into your Montessori homeschool by adding blocks of art time to your daily routine is a great way to teach creative expression, concentration, and both fine/gross motor skills. In fact, the more your children create and process their emotions through their artwork, the more confidence and understanding of the world they build.

Specifically, art-related learning outcomes include the development of self identity, empathy, social and emotional wellbeing, curiosity, cooperation and even persistence. Of course, we know that persistence - aka grit - is the key to long term success. So, of course we here at Multisori love art - it’s our most recent addition to our Montessori homeschooling curriculum - so naturally I wanted to share some of my favorite Montessori art supplies.

I’m all about Montessori on a budget whenever possible! And one of the best ways to make that happen is to buy in bulk where you can. Some of my favorite art items to buy in bulk are:

Glue sticks galore! If you’ve been homeschooling for a while, you’re probably already aware of how fast you can go through glue sticks. This bulk pack is great to ensure you never run low!

Construction paper is another one that’s definitely worth buying in bulk. This set is a two-pack of 240-count, so you’re sure to have plenty of colors for every child to work with as they see fit.

Washable paints are great for so many activities, but they’re especially great for cold weather fun. Not only do they provide opportunities for fun indoors, but they’re also great for painting snow! My kids have so much fun creating snow sculptures, painting them, and then watching the colors change or mix as the art melts away. They'll never know they're learning about science and color theory!

And of course if you’re going to have paints, you need paint tray palettes! This set of 12 includes palettes small and lightweight enough for young painters to hold in their hands and they clean up quickly with just a bit of water.

I love Playdoh, especially when it comes to creative expression and art! The opportunities for fun and learning are limitless with Playdoh, not to mention it’s an incredible multisensory activity that your child will absolutely enjoy for hours on end.

If you’ve got a toddler ready to partake in Montessori art fun, you’ll definitely want to check out these triangular crayons. It’s a set of 8 anti-roll crayons that are easy to grasp while guiding little fingers to a proper writing grip. Plus these crayons won’t roll off the table like regular coloring supplies, helping moms keep at least some toddler art supplies from disappearing under the furniture.

This easel paper roll is genuinely one of the best Montessori art supplies you can invest in. It seems so simple - it’s just paper after all - but there seems to be something magical about it being on a roll that genuinely draws children in. It’s honestly great for homeschool in general as it’s not only great for children’s artwork and doodling, but it’s wonderful for writing numbers and letters, drawing maps, and more!

While the easel for the paper rolls mentioned above isn’t necessary, it sure is fun! It’s super easy to assemble and is sure to last for years to come. The dry erase board and chalkboard are also perfect for building kids’ fine motor skills and pincer grip.

To wrap up some of my favorite Montessori art supplies, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share some of my favorite Melissa & Doug Stamping Sets!

This one is a must if your child is dino-obsessed like mine!

I’ve mentioned this set before when talking about some of my favorite Montessori Geography materials, but it’s so cute, I had to spotlight it again. I love the opportunity here for endless scene creation while learning more about the animals of the rainforest!

Another great animal stamp set is this bigger kit, with 30 stamps, 6 markers, and 2 stamp pads. With so many different animals to choose from, there’s no doubt your child would love this set!
